LADY COUGARS LOSE TO THE BEAVERS
New York, NY- The Medgar Evers College Lady Cougars (9-16 Overall, 4-9 CUNY) lost to the City College Lady Beavers (13-11 Overall, 4-9 CUNY), 63-49 on Friday February.13, 2009 at City College in Upper Manhattan.
This game meant a lot for playoff potential. About an hour before tipoff, the John Jay Bloodhounds were playing at Hunter College. Hunter defeated John Jay 62-54, and that meant Medgar Evers was an automatic bid for the CUNYAC Playoffs. The Lady Beavers needed o win this game or it would come down to a tie breaker scenario with the Bloodhounds of John Jay. Lucky for the Beavers, they did what they had to do and win this game and knock Medgar Evers from 7th to 8th overall in the conference.
The Beavers outscored the Cougars 26-17 at the break. The Cougars shot 23.5 percent from the field (8-34 FG), and 25 percent from the free throw line (1-4 FT/FTA). The Beavers shot 29.6 percent from the field (8-27 FG), 33.3 percent from the 3Pt. range 1-3(3Pt. range), and 69.2 percent from the free throw line (9-13 FT/FTA).
In the second half, the Beavers outscored the Cougars 32-28 and that would propel them to victory. The Beavers shot 36.1 percent from the field (13-36), and 64.7 percent from the free throw line (11-17 FT/FTA). The Cougars shot 31.6 percent from the field (12-36 FG), 100 percent from long distance 1-1 (3Pt. Range), and 50 percent from the free throw line (7-14 FT/FTA).
The Cougars in the loss were led by
Tabrese Harris who tallied 16 points (7-24 FG, 1-1 3Pt. Range, 1-3 FT/FTA). She also tallied six rebounds, an assist, and two steals.
Shakimba Pierre tallied 12 points and 19 rebounds to complete her 10th straight double double.
Shauntelle Nelson tallied 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and cumulated six steals.
The Beavers in the win were led by Ashley Straughn who tallied 15 points (6-11 FG, 3-4 FT/FTA) and grabbed 14 rebounds. She also got credited for four blocks. Nadia Tijani tallied 11 points and 14 rebounds. Anika Rivera tallied 11 points. Both Straughn and Tijani achieved double doubles.
The regular season is over for Medgar Evers College. The Cougars will be back in action next Saturday February 21, 2009 at Baruch College. The game is the quarterfinals of the CUNYAC Tournament. The time is to be announced.
